Cuckoos and Carbon

Date:

Wed, 05/08/2013 - 06:30

Last fall the birding world was all a-twitter over the discovery of a common cuckoo in the wetlands outside Watsonville. Hundreds of birders drove or flew here to see the creature, which normally lives in the Eastern Hemisphere, leaving a sizable carbon footprint. That's the object lesson today when Scott Smithson, local birder and founder of Green Big Day, talks about birding in an eco-friendly way, with reduced carbon emissions and offsets through habitat restoration. Fitz Education Resource Center, Pajaro Valley High School, 500 Harkins Slough Rd, Watsonville. 6:30pm. Free, but reserve a seat with Kathy Fieberling by calling 831.345.1226 or emailing kathy@watsonvillewetlandswatch.org.

Read the Hilltromper interview with Scott Smithson on his hopes for using green and adventure birding to lure the next generation of birders.
